Tottenham, Leicester still in running despite Roma star penning new deal

Roger Ibanez TEAMtalk

Tottenham and Leicester remain keen on signing Roma defender Roger Ibanez this summer, despite the player penning a new deal in Italy.

The 22-year-old has almost doubled his previous salary at Atalanta after penning a contract until 2025.

“This contract extension really means a lot to me. I’ve worked hard to try and show that I deserve to represent this club,” Ibanez told the official club website.

“I am aware that I need to keep on improving. But there is one thing I know for sure: I will give everything I have to Roma, for the foreseeable future.”

New general manager Tiago Pinto announced the new deal. He stated: “Roger is one of a number of young and talented players that the club wants to build around, both now and for the future.

“Since arriving in Rome he has been improving on a consistent basis. We are confident he still has a lot more room to grow.

“We are also delighted to be continuing the proud tradition of Brazilian players at Roma. They have historically enjoyed great success at the club.”

New exit clause a fresh deterrent

Various reports have suggested that the defender has had a release clause of €80m inserted in his new deal.

Roma are hoping that a fee that size will deter any potential suitors from making a future move.

Jose Mourinho not looking at Premier League table

Jose Mourinho not looking at Premier League table

Jose Mourinho says he does not want to look at the Premier League table and is only focused on winning matches following Tottenham's victory at Fulham.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is expected to sign at least one new centre-back this summer after seeing his current crop make a number of errors this summer.

As for Leicester, the link to the Foxes seems a strange one given the success of summer signing Wesley Fofana.

There were rumours of a potential return to Manchester United for Jonny Evans. However, they were quickly shot down when the defender penned a new King Power deal.
