Tottenham lurk as Klopp sanctions £18m exile of Liverpool man

Tottenham and Arsenal have joined Lazio in registering interest in Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren, according to reports.

Lovren, who moved to Anfield from Southampton in 2014, was an important figure under former boss Brendan Rodgers and in the first few years of Jurgen Klopp‘s reign.

However, Virgil van Dijk’s unmissable presence at the back and the form of interchangeable pair Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have seen the Croatia international pushed down the pecking order.

Indeed, the defender was criticised for his performance in Liverpool‘s first Premier League defeat of the season at Watford last month.

According to La Lazio Siamo Noi, Klopp is ready to sell Lovren and has asked interested parties to stump up €20million (£18million) for his signature.

The source says that Arsenal and Tottenham are keeping tabs on the defender’s situation, with both clubs looking to bring new additions in that area at the end of the season.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is said to have put defensive players at the top of his wish list, while Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho is set to lose Jan Vertonghen when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Elsewhere, Lazio have also reportedly registered interest with the Serie A side set to lose Bastos when the season ends.

The club were initially looking at Real Madrid’s Nacho but sporting director Igli Tare is a keen admirer of Lovren, who has a plethora of international experience after 57 games for his country.

The source adds that while Lovren is keen to get more game time having only made 14 appearances this season, he would ask for a top salary at a new club given that he earns £5million a year at Anfield.

Interested parties would reportedly have to convince Lovren with a long-term contract and the promise of a regular role if his salary expectations cannot be met.

In other news, Liverpool have reportedly moved ahead in the race to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

Reports have claimed that Chelsea were keen on the Germany international but will now focus on a deal for Lyon’s Moussa Dembele.
