Tottenham midfielder Gedson Fernandes is close to leaving the club – but he may not be heading straight back to Benfica.
Fernandes joined Tottenham on an 18-month loan deal in January 2020, but that spell has not gone to plan. He is still yet to start a Premier League game.
The midfielder is not expected to fulfil the remaining six months of his time with Tottenham. There have been rumours that he could cancel his loan to return to Benfica.
That’s something his parent club would be willing to explore. Benfica boss Jorge Jesus said in December he would welcome Fernandes back “with open arms”, even though he doesn’t know him very well.
However, it has now emerged that Fernandes’ future could lie elsewhere. According to Tuttomercatoweb, Torino are closing in on an agreement for him.
Fernandes would have to cancel his loan with Tottenham, after which his future would be in Benfica’s hands again. Torino have apparently opened talks over the chance to lure him to Italy.
The report from the Italian website even claims it could be a matter of hours, not days, before Fernandes’ future is agreed.
Torino would use a similar formula to the one Tottenham did to sign Fernandes. They would like to take him on loan for the rest of the season.
Jose Mourinho is unlikely to stand in Fernandes’ way if he seeks an exit from Tottenham. He has only given the 22-year-old two appearances this season – one in the FA Cup against non-league Marine earlier this month and one in the Carabao Cup against Chelsea in September.
Fernandes has not featured at all in the Premier League this term. He has been an unused substitute on three occasions.
He clearly needs to find more regular gametime to continue his development and it seems that will be away from Tottenham.
Fernandes’ situation at Spurs ‘sad’
One man who is not happy with Fernandes’ situation is his father, who is hoping a solution can be found.
Edeson Fernandes spoke about his son’s predicament last month and described it as “sad”.
Fernandes senior hinted at a return to Portugal, but it now seems he will be heading to a different country.
