Tottenham among prime suitors for €20m winger despite Mourinho exit

Tottenham have not dropped their interest in Sampdoria winger Mikkel Damsgaard despite the departure of Jose Mourinho, according to reports.

Damsgaard has been on Tottenham’s radar for some time after breaking onto the scene in Serie A. The Denmark international has surpassed all expectations with Sampdoria this season and is now attracting Premier League interest. It seems Samp might have to sell.

News of Spurs’ interest emerged in January, when it was claimed that they could make a bid for him in the summer.

Damsgaard, an international teammte of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, has kept up his form since then. Hence, he remains an attractive proposition for Tottenham.

According to Club Doria 46, Sampdoria have identified Damsgaard as a player they can sell this summer to balance the books. What’s more, the report names Tottenham as one of his suitors.

Juventus and Inter want to offer Damsgaard the opportunity to progress in Serie A. However, he has plenty of suitors in other countries, with Tottenham topping that list.

Hence, it seems Spurs’ interest in the player did not just stem from their former head coach – despite reports that Mourinho was “crazy” about the player. The club appear to want him regardless, as he would represent a long-term investment.

It could cost between €20m and €25m to prise the 20-year-old away from Sampdoria.

Tottenham are not the only Premier League club to have been linked with Damsgaard. A report in February named West Ham, Leeds and Southampton as three other admirers.

Then, a couple of weeks later, Leicester were also mentioned as an interested party. But the report from Club Doria 46 does not go into huge detail about Damsgaard’s suitors and only makes reference to Tottenham.

Tottenham monitoring fringe Celtic star

Ismaila Soro, Vasilis Barkas Celtic August 2020

Meanwhile, Tottenham have begun monitoring fringe Celtic midfielder Ismaila Soro ahead of a potential transfer swoop, according to a report.

Spurs bolstered their midfield last summer by bringing in Hojbjerg from Southampton. However, ahead of the summer transfer window, Spurs are already making plans for potential additions.

The Daily Mail claims that they are monitoring Soro as a potential holding midfield signing. The newspaper claims that the club see him as a ‘holding player of talent’ who could ‘bolster’ their ranks.

Spurs would face obstacles in signing Soro, namely over a work permit. The Ivory Coast-born player would have to go through an appeal if talks between Tottenham and Celtic progress.
