Tottenham star savaged over ‘sackable offence’ similar to Liverpool ace

A Tottenham defender has been ridiculed for the part he played in their defeat to Man Utd on Sunday, and had his situation compared to that of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Tottenham were dealt a hammer blow to their top four hopes after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Man Utd on Sunday. Spurs led going into the break, but shipped three unanswered goals to leave their Champions League qualification hopes in disarray.

The major talking point of the contest was the incident involving Son Heung-min and Scott McTominay. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described it as an “injustice,” while Jose Mourinho opted to keep his cards close to his chest.

Nevertheless, a lesser publicised moment in the contest drew the attentions of outspoken pundit, Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The ex-Aston Villa forward, speaking to Football Insider, chose to focus on a piece of defending from Sergio Reguilon.

The Argentine has been a dependable performer since his summer arrival. However, he was found wanting for Mason Greenwood’s strike that settled the contest.

Debate has raged recently over the benefits of attacking full-backs who sometimes struggle to defend. The topic came to a head on a recent Monday Night Football in a fiery exchange between Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher over Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Agbonlahor cited the Reds star’s current situation when tearing into Reguilon.

“Reguilon is good going forward but with him, you’ve got the same argument you have with Trent Alexander-Arnold and England,” said Agbonlahor.

“He’s a very good player but with those centre-halves next to him you can’t be so poor defensively.

“The Greenwood goal, the manager would probably sack you in my day if you defended the way he did. It was so easy to get past him and shoot.

“Spurs are in a bit of trouble, to be honest. They’ve got zero chance of top four and zero chance of winning of the Carabao Cup.”

Meanwhile, Tottenham will look to offload “at least six players” this summer before they can start thinking about strengthening their squad, claims a report.

The Daily Mail reports Tottenham “will be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper, right back and central defender” when the window gets underway in June. Burnley’s Nick Pope reportedly their top keeper target.

However, before Jose Mourinho can start allocating funds for new arrivals, he will have to offload some of his squad.

Serge Aurier, Hugo Lloris, Erik Lamela and Juan Foyth could all be moved on with their futures in doubt.

Danny Rose will end his 14-year spell at the club when his contract expires in the summer.

Dele Alli and Harry Winks could also find their time up this summer. Neither have managed to get much game time recently and both have been linked with moves abroad. They are also two players who would command sizeable transfers fees as Spurs look to get their balance sheet in order.

Loan forwards Gareth Bale and Carlos Vinicius also look set to return to their respective clubs. Bale, on £250,000 a week, has made it clear that the plan was always to return to Real Madrid after 12 months back with Spurs.
