Tottenham swoop back in for Chelsea star as West Ham join transfer race

Tottenham have revived their interest in Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud, but face competition from another London rival – according to reports.

Giroud has brought himself back into focus in the transfer market recently after falling down the pecking order at Chelsea. He recently admitted he needed to be playing regularly to keep his place in the French national team.

The former Arsenal star is close to becoming his country’s all-time top scorer. However, his spot in France’s squad for Euro 2020 will be at risk if he does not find regular gametime for his club.

Therefore, he has opened the door to a possible departure again in January, six months before his contract expires.

A similar thing happened last season, but Giroud eventually signed a new deal at Stamford Bridge. He put together a good run of form towards the end of the campaign as a sign of what he could still contribute.

However, despite his impressive form, the Blues added competition for his place by spending big on Timo Werner. This season, Giroud has found himself behind not just Tammy Abraham, but also the German international, in the hierarchy.

Once again, though, he scored an important goal for the club this week. Coming off the bench against Rennes, Giroud headed the winner that booked Chelsea’s place in the Champions League knockout stages.

It led Frank Lampard to admit that he has a “problem” getting the 34-year-old into the team. The Chelsea manager is well aware of Giroud’s importance, still.

If he cannot find him a more prominent role, though, then Chelsea may allow Giroud to leave in January. Reports have suggested they will not stand in his way, as a sign of thanks for his services.

It had been thought that if Giroud was to leave, then moving abroad would be the most likely option. Inter Milan were heavily linked with him before, and Antonio Conte – the man who originally took him to Chelsea – could reignite his interest.

However, reports from Calciomercato now indicate that two sides will rival Inter for his services, in a bid to keep him in the Premier League.

Tottenham and West Ham in for Giroud

The Italian source claims Tottenham and West Ham are keen on Giroud ahead of the January transfer window. Either club would give him the chance to stay in London, the place he has called home since joining Arsenal in 2012.

Both Spurs and West Ham could be considering attacking reinforcements. Tottenham only have Carlos Vinicius as a deputy to Harry Kane, and the Brazilian is only on loan.

Vinicius is yet to start a game in the Premier League, although he has had a decent amount of gametime in the Europa League. Even so, reports have already linked Tottenham with a number of different strikers.

After being linked with the club last January, Giroud has emerged as a target again. Although, unlike other reported targets, he would arrive in January, rather than next summer.

That would give Tottenham an instant boost mid-season in their pursuit of silverware. Giroud has won major honours at every top flight club he has played for.

However, West Ham are also in the hunt. They do not have much depth up front either, which is currently being exposed in the absence of Michail Antonio.

Sebastien Haller has been the main choice up front recently, but his form has been inconsistent since joining the club last summer. Therefore, it would not harm them to have another option.
