Tottenham sent packing after stepping up interest in Prem goal machine

Tottenham have failed with a formal enquiry about the availability of Southampton striker Danny Ings, according to a report.

Jose Mourinho’s men are making moves in the market, with Gareth Bale close to re-joining his former club.

Meanwhile, Sergio Reguilon is also close to following the forward in swapping Real Madrid for Spurs.

Tottenham are also in the hunt for a striker before the end of the transfer window and previous reports claimed the England international is on their radar.

The PA news agency now claims Spurs have stepped up that interest by making an official enquiry to Southampton.

However, the Saints have no intention of selling the striker, whose fine form earned a recall to the England set-up after five injury-hit years.

Ings finished joint second in the Premier League’s Golden Boot race last season, just one goal short of Leicester striker Jamie Vardy’s Premier League tally of 23.

The Guardian also insists that Spurs have not made an official bid for Ings, as yet. For Southampton’s part, the south-coast club are keen to tie him down to a new deal.

The 28-year-old has two years left on his current contract.

Ings joined hometown club Southampton from Liverpool in 2018. He followed up his initial season-long loan with a permanent transfer for a fee rising to £20million.

TOTTENHAM HOPEFUL OF STRIKER DEAL

Mourinho made his desire to sign a new striker clear in last Friday’s press conference.

England captain Harry Kane is Spurs’ only recognised option, despite the ample selection of wide players.

Indeed, Spurs’ hunt for a new centre-forward has entered several avenues.

Initial reports suggested Tottenham wanted to sign Napoli’s Arkadiusz Milik, although talk of that deal has cooled.

More recently, Eintracht Frankfurt hitman Bas Dost has been mentioned as a target.
