Tottenham told to ditch defensive star and try forgotten man instead

Paul Robinson has echoed Chris Waddle’s concerns that Serge Aurier is not the right long-term option for Tottenham.

The former Spurs and Leeds goalkeeper told Football Insider that teams specifically target the right-hand side of Spurs’ defence when Aurier and Davinson Sanchez are playing.

Waddle, who spent a memorable four years at White Hart Lane, made it clear that Aurier is “not the answer” for Spurs at right-back. He also urged the club to sign a replacement this summer.

Aurier has started virtually every match for Tottenham since Jose Mourinho’s arrival. That includes all four games since the restart, with Monday’s 1-0 win over Everton the latest.

And Robinson had identified Argentinian Juan Foyth, who is normally a centre-back, as a better defensive full-back for Spurs.

“I have worried about Aurier’s defensive capabilities for some time,” he told Football Insider.

“When he plays on the right hand side with Davinson Sanchez next to him a lot of teams target them.

“Defensively I have criticised him this year but going forward he offers the team a lot.

“When Foyth came in for the Champions League games they looked a lot more secure.

“Aurier leaves a lot of space and teams target that. We saw Serge Gnabry tear him apart when they played Bayern Munich and I think that exposed him defensively.”

Waddle previously told the Racing Post: “Something has to be done at right-back because Serge Aurier is just not the answer.

“They need a new right-back, they need to sort the centre of defence out.”

Tottenham battling Bundesliga duo to land £25m Vertonghen replacement

Tottenham are reportedly battling two top Bundesliga sides in their bid to land £25million-rated centre-back Ben Godfrey this summer.

With that in mind, The Sun claims that Mourinho wants to sanction a move for Canaries star Godfrey.

However, the London giants will face competition from Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig for the England U21 star.  Read more…
