Transfer guru claims Tottenham still monitoring shock striker target

Tottenham maintain an interest in Watford striker Troy Deeney, according to one transfer expert.

Jose Mourinho confirmed on Friday that he is confident Tottenham will sign a striker before the transfer window closes. He knows they need depth to provide cover for Harry Kane.

The Spurs boss told a press conference: “Yes, I want, I need a striker, but I want to make it very, very clear that the club – the structure above me – knows that I need a striker and also wants a striker.

“Are we going to get one? I honestly believe so. For the balance of the squad, the team needs it because at this moment the squad is getting very balanced, with different options for different positions.

“Especially after the gift we had from the EFL and UEFA, that gives me after 20 years of football a unique experience of playing Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday for two consecutive weeks.

“We realise that more than ever we need that. So yes, we’re working on it.”

However, reports emerged later in the day that it was unlikely that Spurs would be able to sign either Patson Daka or Arkadiusz Milik.

The duo had entered Spurs’ thinking due to their goalscoring exploits for RB Salzburg and Napoli respectively. However, Daka wants to stay where he is, and Milik’s asking price is too high.

Therefore, Tottenham are having to weigh up alternatives. And according to Sky Sports‘ Dharmesh Sheth, Troy Deeney is still an option.

Deeney saga could drag on

The Watford captain was a shock target for Spurs earlier in the transfer window. Deeney could leave the Hornets following their relegation from the Premier League last season.

But while he is set to start the new season in the Championship, he could be a Tottenham player in October, Sheth claims.

Sheth told Sky Sports: “West Brom are interested in Troy Deeney, and it’s thought Tottenham are just keeping an eye on the situation.

“If he does leave Watford – it’s a big if still, he’s Mr Watford, he’s been there for 10 years, made nearly 400 appearances – but if he does, then it’s likely to happen towards the end of the window.

“Be it to West Brom, be it to Tottenham, be it to another club.”

The transfer guru added a reminder that the transfer window will remain open for EFL clubs until October 16th – more than a week after the window closes elsewhere.

Therefore, Deeney’s future could be up in the air until then.
