Tottenham hold talks over exciting Stuttgart star also wanted by Leeds

Tottenham have held talks over a deal to sign Stuttgart attacker Nicolas Gonzalez this month as Jose Mourinho looks to increase his options in attack.
Spurs are very much alive in four competitions this season. They are well placed in the Premier League and on Sunday romped into the FA Cup fourth round. In April they will contest the Carabao Cup final and also hope to go deep into the Europa League.
Indeed, Lucas Moura has very much made clear Tottenham’s intentions for the season.
Last season, Mourinho and Tottenham endured a difficult run-in. A torn hamstring sustained by Harry Kane – together with a number of other injuries to key personnel – left Spurs light in attack.
This time around, Mourinho plans to ensure his squad has better options and strength in depth.
And despite the fact that Lucas Moura and Carlos Vinicius both laid down their credentials, Spurs still want more attacking options.
As such, Tottenham have had ‘recent discussions’ about a move for Gonzalez, according to The Athletic.
The attacker was linked with Leeds over the summer, with a move not materialising.
Since then though, he has scored five goals in 11 Bundesliga appearances this season.

The 22-year-old enhanced his prospects on Sunday, with a goal and an assist as Augsberg were beaten 4-1.
With no exit clause in Gonzalez‘s contract, Stuggart are said to value the player at around €25m.
Spurs see that £23m asking price as decent value in the modern market. As such, his potential signing has been rubber-stamped by Mourinho.
Mourinho plays down transfer chances
Spurs invested heavily in the summer with Gareth Bale, Sergio Reguilon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Matt Doherty, Vinicius and Joe Rodon all arriving.
As such, Mourinho has played down their chances of making a big-money signing in the January window.
“I’m not expecting, no,” Mourinho said recently.
“Times are not easy. The club made a big effort in the summer to try and build a good squad.
“Honestly, if something good happened to us, it would be a big surprise for me. I don’t feel the right to ask for something.”
