Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has backed Jose Mourinho to bring in a £45million centre-back who could lead them to the Premier League title.
Spurs currently sit top of the table after an impressive start to the new campaign, while they are also in the last eight of the League Cup and the knockout stages of the Europa League.
However, reigning champions Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City are viewed as more likely title winners.
The trio all have arguably stronger squads than Mourinho’s men. But Robinson thinks the addition of one signing could change all that.
The player is question is Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar, who has been a major target since the summer.
Slovakia international Skriniar was Mourinho’s top defensive target over the summer. Spurs, however, refused to pay Inter’s £45m asking price for the player.
That is despite having a fine defensive record this season, with just nine goals conceded in 11 games.
Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld have been the mainstays of that defence, but Robinson thinks Skriniar would be an upgrade.
“Joe Rodon has done excellently well since he came in,” Robinson told Football Insider.
“It was a vital signing before the deadline. But I still think Mourinho will strengthen in that area next year.
“Rodon is still young, so is Japhet Tanganga and Davinson Sanchez has been frozen out. I think it is an area they will look at.
“Of course they have very strong options when you consider Alderweireld and Eric Dier as well. But there is no harm in signing one more.
“Wow. A player that is of the level of Milan Skriniar would be a welcome addition.”
Both Dier and Alderwerield will be pivotal in upcoming away trips to Crystal Palace and Liverpool, while Spurs are in Europa League action again on Thursday night when they fight Royal Antwerp for top spot in Group J.
Spurs on scouting mission for Leverkusen flier
Manchester United and Tottenham are among four Premier League clubs who will send scouts to watch winger Leon Bailey on Thursday, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that Arsenal and Everton will also hope to have close eyes on the Bayer Leverkusen winger.
Bailey could start for the Bundesliga club in their Europa League tie with Slavia Prague. Leverkusen, who are already through to the knockout stages, can secure top spot with victory in Germany.
But for the Jamaica international, the game presents a chance to continue his electric start to the season.
Bailey has already scored five goals and assisted six others in 14 games in all competitions. Indeed, his five direct contributions in Europe have helped Leverkusen progress to the Europa League’s last 32.
The winger has also provided two goals and four assists in the German top flight, with his club second in the table.
However, Bailey will aim to prove his worth to more than just his teammates and fans on Thursday. Despite Covid-19 restrictions limiting access to the BayArena, scouts will gain access to watch the winger.
The Daily Mail adds that the four Premier League clubs in question are pondering a summer move for the player. Read more…
