One Real Madrid defender is open to a Premier League move as two clubs prepare to battle for him, while a Manchester United misfit is wanted by a former manager of their rivals – all according to the latest transfer gossip.
CHELSEA BATTLE FOR VARANE
Chelsea are ready to make a summer move for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.
That’s according to AS, who expect the Blues to pose a threat to Manchester United in the race for the France centre-back.
Varane is one of the most high-profile defenders on the planet, having played a key role when France won the last edition of the World Cup. It added to his vast array of medals from his club career in Spain.
But his time in Madrid may soon be coming to an end. His contract expires in 2022, meaning the La Liga giants may need to cash in on him.
A move to the Premier League has long since been suggested. Man Utd were thought to be leading the race to sign him as they look for a partner for Harry Maguire.
But Chelsea have also been in the background with an interest and are now stepping forwards.
According to AS, Thomas Tuchel has requested that Chelsea sign Varane in the summer. They need a long-term successor to main centre-back Thiago Silva.
France Football add that Varane would be open to the idea of moving to England. Man Utd remain contenders to take him as well but Chelsea are now firming up their own plans.
Reports earlier this week suggested Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule was a top target. But the opportunity to sign Varane may be too good to turn down.
It is thought Madrid would want €60m as a transfer fee, but they are willing to sell the 27-year-old.
