Paper Talk: Man Utd battling Barcelona for £45m centre-back

Pau Torres TEAMtalk

Manchester United are ready to do battle with Barcelona for a £45m centre-back, while Atletico Madrid are refusing to do business with Arsenal over Thomas Partey, according to Tuesday’s transfer gossip.

Manchester United are looking at Villarreal defender Pau Torres to strengthen their back-line, but face major competition from Barcelona.

Despite finishing with the third best defensive record in the league, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stills wants to strengthen and find a new partner for Harry Maguire.

Question marks remain over Victor Lindelof, while there has also been talk of Eric Bailly being loaned out next season.

According to The Times, United have drawn up a four-man shortlist of potential centre-back signings, with Villarreal star Torres and Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake both on the list.

Ideally Solskjaer wants a left-footed central defender to compliment Maguire, which would allow the England international to move to the right side of the defence.

Torres enjoyed a strong campaign with Villarreal and has the speed and athleticism that United’s back-line has missed.

However, not only are Villarreal extremely reluctant to sell Torres – who came through the club’s academy – but United are not the only team looking to sign him.

According to Spanish radio station COPE, Barca are also keeping tabs on the 23-year-old and will make a move if they miss out on Manchester City youngster Eric Garcia.

Both United and Barca have been made aware that Villarreal will only let Torres – who still has four years to run on his contract – leave if his release clause is met, which stands at €50million (£45.5m).
