Transfer Gossip: Man Utd urged to beat Liverpool to re-sign failed Sir Alex player; Potter’s Chelsea replacement named; Newcastle chase £54m Guimaraes partner

Ashley Young battles with Wilfried Zaha during Crystal Palace v Man Utd in Premier League at Selhurst Park

Manchester United are being linked with a summer move for a one-time £80m-rated winger also eyed by Liverpool, Chelsea will look to Spain if they axe Graham Potter, while Monday’s Transfer Gossip claims Newcastle fancy a £54m midfield signing to partner Bruno Guimaraes.

CRYSTAL PALACE STAR TOLD TO RE-SIGN FOR MAN UTD

Manchester United are being urged to bring Wilfried Zaha back to the club this summer – to help take Marcus Rashford on to new heights.

The Crystal Palace winger is nearing the end of his deal at Selhurst Park. A cult hero for the Eagles, the 30-year-old will have no shortage of suitors.

At his peak, Zaha has been valued at £80m, and is reportedly on the radars of Arsenal and Barcelona. However, Liverpool are also being strongly linked with his signing, with Jurgen Klopp a huge admirer.

And the chance to sign the Palace player on a free and help with Liverpool’s summer rebuild is seemingly of big interest to Klopp.

However, former Man Utd star Danny Simpson wants to see Zaha back at Old Trafford.

The winger was Sir Alex Ferguson’s last signing for the Red Devils before retiring in 2013. But the winger struggled to impose himself at Old Trafford and made just four appearances under David Moyes.

Having been loaned to Cardiff, he then re-joined Crystal Palace where he has become a major star. He is also the club’s all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League.

However, his time at the club is due to end this summer.

Rashford to benefit from Zaha, Man Utd return

But rather than signing for Liverpool, Simpson, speaking to Stadium Astro, wants Erik ten Hag to re-sign him.

“It’s a tough question, he can go wherever he likes especially on a free transfer in the summer,” Simpson said.

“I feel like Wilf plays better when he is the main man. I know he was a lot younger when he went to United, but if he goes to another top four top side he’s not going to be the main man.

“So it is interesting to see where he goes but I think somewhere like Liverpool could do with him because at the moment it is not happening for them.”

Simpson came up through the ranks at Man Utd before becoming a title winner while at Leicester.

And he can see nothing but benefits from a return to Old Trafford for Zaha, with his move allowing Rashford to hit even greater heights.

“I would bring him back here,” Simpson said. “If you looking at Marcus Rashford as the No 9 and Wilfried on the left, that is some firepower.

“It was Sir Alex Ferguson who signed him then he left. Moyes obviously came in and it didn’t work out.

“I do genuinely believe if Sir Alex was the manager when he signed we would have seen a different Wilfried Zaha at Manchester United.”

CHELSEA CONSIDERING GRAHAM POTTER REPLACEMENT

Chelsea are looking towards Spain should the axe fall on Graham Potter, according to a report.

The 47-year-old was appointed as Chelsea manager in September as a replacement for the sacked Thomas Tuchel.

But results since he took charge have not been as expected. And their goalless draw at home to Fulham on Friday night means they are already some 10 points adrift of the Champions League places.

And with the Blues spending some £500m on new signings, the pressure is firmly on Potter’s shoulders.

Indeed, our transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed plans are already in place at Chelsea to see another transfer record smashed this summer.

As such, anything less than a top four finish or Champions League success will be deemed a failure for Potter.

And with the knives already sharpening, reports in Spain claim the Blues hierarchy have their eyes on his replacement.

To that end, Chelsea are reportedly ready to turn to Luis Enrique.

The former Barcelona manager is currently out of work having left Spain after the World Cup.

And Enrique is being strongly linked with a return to club football. To that end, Atletico Madrid are reportedly considering him as a replacement for Diego Simeone this summer.

However, it’s reported that Todd Boehly also wants him at Chelsea too. And the 52-year-old will become their No 1 target should Potter be sent on his way.

NEWCASTLE CHASE MANUEL UGARTE

Newcastle are making regular checks on Sporting Lisbon’s Manuel Ugarte ahead of a possible summer move.

The 21-year-old midfielder has a huge £54m (€60m) exit clause in his contract, and is also reportedly on Tottenham’s radar.

However, Portuguese outlet Record claims it is Newcastle who now lead the chase.

Eddie Howe is seemingly a huge admirer of the Uruguayan and wants to bring him to St James’ Park.

And he is seen as the perfect midfield partner for Bruno Guimaraes, who has himself been a huge success on Tyneside. Playing alongside the Brazilian has been, in the main, Sean Longstaff. And while his performances have been good, Howe seemingly sees Ugarte as a perfect foil for Guimaraes.

The defensive midfielder has been capped six times by his country already and is tipped for big things.

Indeed, Sporting hope to tie him to a new deal and extend his clause to £71.5m (€80m).

But with his current deal expiring in 2025, the player appears in no hurry to commit.

And that could open the door to a move to St James’ Park this summer. Much will depend on Newcastle’s finish in the Premier League this season, though.

They are currently fourth and a return of Champions League football at St James’ Park would seriously increase their FFP range, and therefore, their ability to bring in and attract more top talent.
