Manchester United have stepped up their interest in trying to sign a Chelsea defensive midfield lynchpin, while Tottenham have been lifted in their hopes of signing a top centre-back target – all in Sunday’s Paper Talk.
CHELSEA ACE TIPPED FOR UNITED SWITCH
Manchester United have reportedly ramped up their interest in signing Chelsea defensive midfielder N’Golo Kante before the transfer window closes.
According to reports from the Daily Mirror, the Red Devils have made an enquiry for the World-Cup winning midfielder.
The 29-year-old, who won league titles with Leicester City and Chelsea, is also attracting strong interest from Inter Milan – who are managed by former Blues boss Antonio Conte.
Kante has been a major player for the Blues since he joined the club in 2016, but Frank Lampard is said to be prepared to let him move on.
The west London club have already spent more than £200m in the summer transfer window, but they would recoup around £45m if they allowed Kante to move on. That would also allow them to step up their own pursuit of West Ham’s Declan Rice.
Jadon Sancho still remains United’s top target, even this late in the window, but there are glaring issues down the spine of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team.
The Red Devils have already conceded five goals in their opening two Premier League games, with central defence and protection in front of the back four major needs.
Kante would certainly provide the latter, allowing the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek to fully flourish.
But while the report adds that United have made contact with Kante’s advisors, the Frenchman is reluctant to leave Chelsea at the moment.
