Paper Talk: Sancho concerns prompt Man Utd to move for £40m alternative

Manchester United are considering a £40m alternative to Jadon Sancho, while Chelsea have made an offer for a Serie A midfield star, according to Tuesday’s paper gossip.

MAN UTD TURN TO £40M LEVERKUSEN WINGER

Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a move for Leon Bailey amid concerns Jadon Sancho will remain at Borussia Dortmund for another season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had identified the England international winger as his No.1 transfer priority this summer. However, the Bundesliga club are refusing to budge on the asking price, and will not allow Sancho to leave for anything less than £100million.

United’s executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, warned last month that his own club would have to be frugal in the market given the coronavirus pandemic.

And with the likes of Liverpool still actively chasing a move for Sancho, who has also been tipped to return to Man City, United are ready to look elsewhere. as reported in the Daily Mail.

Bailey was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League two years ago but his career has stunted at Bayer Leverkusen, with a string of niggling injuries curtailing his progress.

Kai Havertz, another player United maintain an interest in, is currently considered to be Leverkusen’s top asset – leaving Bailey available for considerably less.

The Jamaica international is valued at around £40m and offers the sort of pace and versatility Solskjaer is looking for to bolster his forward line.

Odion Ighalo has filled a hole in the United squad during his loan spell from Shanghai Shenhua. However, Solskjaer is keen that any permanent new addition does not block the path for Mason Greenwood, who has scored 13 goals in all competitions this season.

But Bailey’s fitness record may represent a concern to Solskjaer. The attacker has made just nine league starts this season, although he has scored five times and laid on two assists.
