Alexander-Arnold feels myth needs to be exposed over Liverpool ‘crumbling’

Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold says that his teammates have no reason to face criticism for their solid performances in recent weeks.

The Reds sat top of the Premier League on Christmas Day, but now face a battle to make the top four.

A run of two wins in 10 games since the 7-0 rout of Crystal Palace has seen them drop to fourth. But while they remain in the top four, Chelsea and West Ham sit only a point behind and have yet to play this weekend.

Everton, meanwhile, can move level on points with their Merseyside rivals with victory over Fulham.

However, Alexander-Arnold has rejected suggestions that his side’s recent slump has come from poor performances.

“Everyone talks about a bad spell and a dip in form and stuff, but I feel personally we’ve performed well in the last few weeks, in the last two months or six weeks or so,” the England international told liverpoolfc.com.

“I thought we’ve performed well, it’s just that we haven’t been getting the results [and] it’s a results business so there’s no excuses for that.

“But I think confidence-wise, we’re not playing badly, we’re not getting battered.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admits their Premier League title defence is over following their 3-1 defeat at Leicester.

“We’ve been playing well but not getting the results so it’s about turning those performances into results and that’s probably what we need to look at most.”

However, the fact remains that Liverpool have lost three Premier League games in a row. What’s more, they have failed to score in five of their past 10 games.

Their latest result saw them lose 3-1 to Leicester. Despite taking the lead through Mohamed Salah in the second half, more defensive mistakes cost the visitors at the King Power Stadium.

Alexander-Arnold admits Liverpool ‘crumbled’

“I think for 70 to 75 minutes we were outstanding, up there with one of our best performances – counter-pressing, taking the ball off them for fun, they couldn’t really get out. Really, really top drawer from us,” Alexander-Arnold added.

“I think first half we never created too many clear-cut chances but second half we did, had a few more shots, scored, and we were in the driving seat.

“Then the tables turned and they put the game to bed within the matter of five to 10 minutes and that’s football.

“It happened so quickly, it just happened in a moment and we’ve just crumbled at the end of the day.”

Liverpool’s run does not get any easier, though. They face RB Leipzig in the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday before hosting Everton on Saturday evening.
