Trio face Arsenal exit as finer details emerge of Gabriel Magalhaes transfer

Gabriel Magalhaes TEAMtalk

Arsenal have moved a significant step closer to the signing of Gabriel Magalhaes after details of the transfer were revealed.

Reports have linked several clubs with a move for the 22-year-old, who has impressed in the last 18 months.

Initially, Manchester United and Everton were keen as they look to bolster their respective defences. However, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer allegedly holds concerns about a move.

Arsenal have shown interest throughout and, more recently, Napoli have also joined the race. In any case, Lille president Gerard Lopez has confirmed that the player is leaving.

However, it emerged on Tuesday that it was Arsenal had won the race for the player after striking a deal.

As per the Daily Telegraph, Arsenal will pay Lille €25m (£22.6m) for the stylish Brazilian.

The player has agreed terms on a five-year deal at Emirates Stadium, keeping him there until summer 2025. He is believed to have agreed a package in the region of £90,000 a week.

Negotiations were originally started by former technical director Raul Sanllehi. However, following his departure, the deal has since been concluded by Edu and head coach Mikel Arteta.

The signing will see Arsenal secure one of their major targets this summer. Arteta was keen to bring in the Brazilian despite two other defensive additions. The Gunners have already sealed a permanent deal for Pablo Mari. Teenage defender William Saliba also arrives having concluded his time at St Etienne.

Gabriel’s arrival, however, will leave the Gunners with a surplus of defenders.

The Telegraph, however, expects at least two departures from their defence this summer.

According to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport , Arsenal defender Sokratis has emerged on Roma’s radar.

Another man, Calum Chambers, could return to newly-promoted Fulham.

In addition, the Gunners are also looking to offload Germany defender Shkodran Mustafi.

The defender has struggled to find his consistent best since a big-money move from Valencia. Arsenal are reported to have circulated his name to potential buyers. However, their efforts to offload him could be hindered by a recent hamstring injury. That will see the 28-year-old miss the start of next season.

Pundit fears Saliba could struggle under pressure

Martin Keown, meanwhile, has warned supporters not to expect too much from Saliba next season.

The player is still a teenager and has a total of just 28 league appearances to his name.

But he has now linked up with Arsenal after ending his time at St Etienne. He cost the Gunners £27m.

Asked if he felt there is undue pressure on the France U20 international, Keown said: “There definitely is.

“It is one of those. I would have been happier if Arsenal had paid more money and brought him at the start of last season.

“There have long-been questions over the Arsenal defence. Saliba was expensive, but he is also young and has not played that many professional games.

“It can’t be expected that he will walk straight into Arsenal, right into the team and be on it from the off.”

Keown also wants a number of fringe Arsenal players sold.
