Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is ready to push ahead with plans to sign Sander Berge from relegation-certainties Sheffield United.
Berge only joined the Blades in January 2020 for a fee of £22m, but looks destined to leave if relegation is confirmed in the coming weeks.
The Bramall Lane outfit are bottom of the table and parted company with boss Chris Wilder prior to their 5-0 thrashing at Leicester.
With a return to the Championship looking inevitable, the Blades are likely to lose some of their top talent.
And top of that bill is Berge, who has been strongly linked with Aston Villa, Arsenal and Tottenham.
However, reports on Tuesday claimed Liverpool are also ready to join the hunt for the powerful Norwegian.
Berge is very well known to Klopp and has been aware of his talents for some time. Indeed, Liverpool were strongly linked to Berge prior to his move to Bramall Lane. That was after the Reds’ Champions League battles with his former club, Genk.
And following the November 2019 clash, Klopp was reported to have held an intriguing chat with Berge.
“You are an interesting player, a very interesting player,” Klopp was reported to have said.
Berge refused to reveal exactly what the German had said to him, however.
“It was a great moment. It is nice. You take it with a smart smile. It is nice that such a reputable trainer comes away and says something like that,” said Berge.
“But overall, it’s the team performance I’m happy with. We go ahead, get up and play evenly with Liverpool throughout the match. That’s what matters most.”
Now it seems Klopp could finally be set to land his man, with the Norwegian a candidate to replace Gini Wijnaldum in the engine room.
It’s reported Liverpool could soon make contact with the Norwegian and offer him an immediate return to the Premier League.
Two others to follow Wijnaldum out
The Dutchman’s move to Barcelona is seemingly “95% done” – but his won’t be the only exit at Anfield this summer.
Indeed, Marko Grujic also looks set to finally complete a move away from Merseyside this summer. Arriving as Klopp’s first Liverpool signing, the Serbian has just eight Premier League appearances to his name for the Reds.
He has spent the last three seasons out on loan – two years with Hertha Berlin and now with FC Porto.
Indeed, his form at FC Porto has revived interest in the 24-year-old. His combative displays have helped the Portuguese side into the quarter-finals, Grujic catching the eye.
The Reds are said to be looking for a fee of around £20m for the former Red Star Belgrade man.
In addition, the Daily Express claims time could also be up for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. He has suffered a plethora of injuries during his time at Anfield and could be sold if the price is right this summer.
With Curtis Jones emerging as a regular this season, Oxlade-Chamberlain has had to make do with a periphery role.
With just two Premier League starts to his name this season, he could be moved on this summer.
