True Cavani feelings on Ronaldo emerge as decision is made on striker’s future

Manchester United's Edison Cavani reacts after scoring during the English Premier League soccer match between Manchester United and Fulham FC

Edinson Cavani remains unperturbed by Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to the club after the Uruguayan reportedly made a firm decision on his Manchester United future.

Ronaldo recently sealed a dramatic return to Old Trafford more than a decade after he left for Real Madrid. One of the greatest players in the history of the game is back in a red shirt, having made an immediate impact. Three goals in two games shows that, despite being 36, he remains a potent goal threat.

His arrival, however, is not all good news for everybody. Indeed, Jamie Carragher explained how his return to Old Trafford sabbotages the future of two other United stars.

One of those most impacted by Ronaldo’s return is Cavani. The Uruguayan’s future was very much under the spotlight over the summer amid links to Boca Juniors.

Ultimately, though, Cavani decided to stay amid the belief he was destined to play a major role this season.

However, Ronaldo’s signing changed all that and to add insult to injury, he even took the No 7 shirt off his back. Ronaldo though was quick to thank the Uruguayan and it seems it was a gesture done with the latter’s blessing.

That has led to fresh speculation that Cavani could seek an exit from Old Trafford in January.

ESPN Brasil, though, insists that’s far from the case. They state Cavani does ‘not feel intimidated’ by Ronaldo’s return. Furthermore, they state there is a confidence from Cavani that he will ‘soon be back in the United side’.

They state that, having competed with Luis Suarez, Kylian Mbappe, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Neymar for a place in the past, he sees no reason why he cannot also ‘cannot play alongside Ronaldo’.

The report concludes that Cavani will definitely stay at United over the winter months and fully intends to honour his contract.

However, with his deal expiring at the end of the season, a decision will then be made as to what happens next.

Indeed, all signs do point towards a summer 2022 exit for the player. The 34-year-old currently has 17 goals in 40 appearances for United.

Ronaldo not all good news for United – Carragher

Writing in his column for the Daily Telegraph, Liverpool legend Carragher has dampened the elevated mood at United with a sobering assessment of Ronaldo’s return.

“Ronaldo, his signing causes as many problems as it solves for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer,” wrote Carragher. “Ronaldo could prove to be a better signing for the Premier League than for Manchester United.

“I am certain Ronaldo will challenge Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah and Romelu Lukaku for this season’s golden boot.

“As we saw last weekend against Newcastle United on his second United debut, Ronaldo’s mere presence is a certainty of goals. His comeback has transformed the mood at his club and raised the profile of English football even more.

“But the broader question is whether Ronaldo gets United nearer to being a team that can win the title and Champions League.

“On the evidence of the first few games, albeit with three wins in five, I would say no. Ronaldo’s match-winning ability will inevitably make United stronger. What his arrival alone cannot do is turn United into a title-winning unit or impose the distinctive way of playing they still lack.

“That must be concerning for them as the transitional period should be over.”
