TT’s Euro Ratings: England v France

admin

ENGLAND

Joe Hart: England’s number one goalkeeper saved well from Alou Diarra but it could be argued was beaten too easily by Samir Nasri. 7.

Glen Johnson: Not the easiest task trying to subdue Franck Ribery, but the Liverpool man did his job pretty well. 7.

John Terry: Did what manager Roy Hodgson wanted. Made his tackles, won his headers and led the rearguard action. 7.

Joleon Lescott: Delighted at his first England goal and defiant in defence. 8.

Ashley Cole: Did not have much opportunity to push forward as England found themselves pressed back. 7.

James Milner: Industrious as always, but lacks a touch of quality, as he proved. 7.

Steven Gerrard: Brilliant free-kick to create the goal, but has to take some of the responsibility for England not keeping the ball. 7.

Scott Parker (off 77): Tireless display from the Tottenham man, although, like Gerrard, didn’t really take the sting out of the game. 7.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (off 77): Not a Michael Owen-type introduction to tournament football, but didn’t let anyone down either, which is excellent in itself. 7.

Ashley Young: A fleeting force. His precise through ball for Milner should have been rewarded with a goal. Booked. 7.

Danny Welbeck (off 89): Capable of so much more than this but given the ball infrequently and too little support when he was. 7.

SUBSTITUTES:

Jordan Henderson (on 77): Never really got into the game. 6.

Jermain Defoe (on 77): No real opportunity to impress. 6.

Theo Walcott (on 89): Not enough time to make an impact.

FRANCE

Hugo Lloris: Did not have much to do. No chance with goal and opted not to bring James Milner down for one the midfielder then missed. 7.

Mathieu Debuchy: Edged his private battle with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and repeatedly got forward to good effect. 8.

Adil Rami: Not put under enough pressure by England’s forwards, able to stroll forward when he liked. 7.

Philippe Mexes: Dictated France’s play as, like Rami, not shut down quickly enough. 7.

Patrice Evra: Conceded free-kick for England goal. Usual threat on the overlap. 7.

Alou Diarra: Denied by Hart’s reaction save and kept France rolling forward. 7.

Yohan Cabaye (off 83): Brutal shot blocked by John Terry before half-time. Difficult man to pin down. Almost won it for France with late volley deflected wide by Welbeck. Impressive. 9.

Samir Nasri: Prodded and probed and eventually found a way through, beating Manchester City team-mate Joe Hart at his near post. 8.

Franck Ribery: France’s main threat. Left Oxlade-Chamberlain for dead with one goal-line burst and claimed assist for Nasri’s effort. 8.

Florent Malouda (off 83): Solid if unspectacular performance from the Chelsea man. 7.

Karim Benzema: Forceful presence as France’s attacking spearhead but denied a clear sight of goal. 8.

SUBSTITUTES:

Marvin Martin (on 83): Not enough time to make an impact.

Hatem Ben Arfa (on 83): Not enough time to make an impact.
