Two Premier League clubs mentioned as pundit fears Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou could be poached

Former Tottenham keeper Paul Robinson believes Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is doing such a good job that Premier League clubs will have the Australian on their radar.

The reigning Scottish Premiership champions hammered Old Firm rivals Rangers 4-0 on Saturday afternoon to go five points clear at the top of the table.

And Postecoglou, who signed a 12-month rolling contract in June 2021, claims his side are getting ‘better and better’.

But speaking to Football Insider, Robinson was asked if the likes of Leicester and Aston Villa could move for Postecoglou.

The two midlands clubs are struggling at the wrong end of the table. Indeed, they only have one win between them in 12 games so far this season.

And Robinson thinks Postecoglou would be an option if the Foxes or Villa sack Brendan Rodgers or Steven Gerrard respectively.

He told Football Insider:  “That will be the worry. Postecoglou has done an outstanding job since he has come into there.

“When he first came in, I had to do a lot of research on his background. He was an unknown quantity. You have to give Celtic a lot of credit for the way the club sourced him. They did their due diligence.

“He has transformed them. You forget how far behind Rangers they were when he came in.

“Scottish football, financially, is where it is. The Premier League will always be a big draw. Whenever anyone does well they will be linked with jobs south of the border.

“Look at Steven Gerrard at Rangers and Brendan Rodgers at Celtic, both of them made the move.”

Gerrard shows Premier League is big step up

Whilst Postecoglou is doing a tremendous job at Celtic, Gerrard has already shown that managing in Scotland’s top flight compared to England’s is a completely different level.

The Liverpool legend guided Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership crown in a decade in 2021. However, he quit for a return to England in November 2021 when Villa appointed him as their new boss.

The Villa Park outfit endured a mixed bag of results under Gerrard last term, and this season has started poorly.

Indeed, Villa currently sit 17th in the table with only one win from their opening six games.

That has led to a section of Villa supporters calling for Gerrard’s head and also highlights the chasm that exists between the Scottish Premiership and the Premier League.

Indeed, Gerrard already has a big advantage over Postecoglou in knowing how tough it is to operate in England, but is still struggling anyway.

While any move for the Australian would be considered a gamble, the difference he’s made at Celtic cannot be ignored.

Celtic are in Champions League action this week when they take on holders Real Madrid on Tuesday evening.
