Two sources reveal Tottenham offer for talented RB Leipzig midfield gem

Tottenham have launched an approach to sign RB Leipzig captain Marcel Sabitzer in January, two transfer sources have confirmed.

Sabitzer has developed into a key player since joining Leipzig in 2014. Only two players have made more appearances for the relatively young club than him.

Tottenham became aware of what he could do when they lost to Leipzig in last season’s Champions League. His goal knocked Spurs out of the competition.

Since that day, Sabitzer has been linked with a move to the London club. He has made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League and said he has “nothing to rule out” when asked about Tottenham’s interest back in April.

Now two journalists have confirmed Spurs have made their approach ahead of the January window.

As per journalist Ekrem Konur, Tottenham are fairly advanced in their talks to sign the Austrian.

He claims the Premier League top-four hopefuls have already offered Leipzig an unnamed Spurs player in exchange as part of the deal. Furthermore, he claims Jose Mourinho has given the potential deal the green light.

That prospective transfer has also been confirmed by Bundesliga expert Christian Falk. The BILD head of football has also confirmed Sabitzer wants the move to north London.

In addition, he states Sabitzer is already Leipzig’s top earner on €6m a year. With his current deal due to expire in summer 2022, Leipzig are struggling to agree an extension and “have a problem raising his salary”.

Those £105,000 a week wages could be raised to new heights with a move to Tottenham.

Sabitzer fee reported to be €30m

With the Austrian’s deal expiring in 18 months, it’s reported Leipzig will be looking for a fee of around €30m to let him go.

That price tag has dropped significantly since Tottenham’s interest first emerged back in March.

Last season was the most prolific of Sabitzer’s career. He scored 16 goals in all competitions – the first time he has reached double figures in a season.

In addition, the 26-year-old has eight goals in 44 appearances for his country.

Capable of playing either as an attacking midfielder or in a more defensive role, Sabitzer would add a new dimension to Tottenham’s side.
