Jamie Carragher has been backed by a former Liverpool team-mate after a video emerged of him spitting at a 14-year-old football fan.
Carragher is facing showdown talks with Sky Sports following the incident, for which he has already apologised to those involved.
The former Anfield favourite reacted to taunts from Manchester United fans following the clash between the two Premier League rivals on Saturday afternoon.
The 40-year-old claims that he was goaded by the supporters continually before he then spat in their direction.
He later confirmed on Twitter that he spoke to the fans personally over the phone to offer an apology, before doing so again on social media.
David Thompson, who played with Carragher at Liverpool from 1996 to 2000, believes that the video is not a fair reflection on the former England star’s character.
Writing on Twitter, he said: “I’ve known Jamie Carragher for 30 years and I can tell you now that incident is completely out of character for him.
“Fair play for phoning the guy and his daughter up and apologising.
“He’s only human at the end of day and the frustration has got the better of him.”
