West Ham have reportedly stepped up their bid to sign Manchester United star Harry Maguire following the £105million departure of Declan Rice to Arsenal on Saturday.

Hammers boss David Moyes is looking to offer the England centre-back a lifeline to salvage his flagging career, although Maguire will have to take a significant pay cut to fit in with the Hammers’ wage structure.

United are known to have sounded out the London club about taking some of their players in exchange for Rice earlier in the window, with Maguire’s named raised along with those of Scott McTominay and Anthony Elanga.

Indeed, the Daily Mail claims that United are open to offers for up to 13 players this summer as they hope to raise as much as £100m for new signings.

Maguire set United back a whopping £80m when he signed from Leicester back in 2019 but could now be allowed to leave for half that fee.

However, the Mail adds that players will not be forced out of the Old Trafford exit door if their valuation is not met and will be allowed to stay and fight for their place.

Maguire made just eight Premier League starts last season and slipped down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag, despite the fact he remains a standout performer in Gareth Southgate’s England side.

Indeed, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and even left-back Luke Shaw are all currently ahead of the former Foxes man in Ten Hag’s pecking order.

His position as captain also appears untenable, though Ten Hag has quashed speculation a decision over the next skipper will be decided by his squad.

“No, I don’t let the dressing room vote,” he said. “It is up to me.”

Maguire trying to prove a point

Maguire is known to have been working incredibly hard over the summer to improve his fitness and give Ten Hag a different proposition to think about before the new season starts.

United have been in training for over a week now with their first game held last week as they beat Leeds 2-0 in Norway in their opening game of the summer.

Non-internationals such as Mason Mount, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton all played in the game which saw youngsters Noam Emeran and Joe Hugill find the net in the second half.

They will continue their campaign against Lyon on Wednesday before heading to the United States for games against Arsenal, Wrexham, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
