Jose Mourinho could return to club management imminently after a report in Spain claimed Valencia have already made contact with his agent Jorge Mendes.
Mourinho was axed by Daniel Levy at Tottenham on Monday after just 17 months in the job. Spurs’ faltering league form and exits from the Europa League and FA Cup eventually forced Levy’s hand. Mourinho has yet to make a comment about his sacking, but he could find himself back in a job almost immediately.
According to TodoFichajes, Valencia owner Peter Lim will try for a second time to get Mourinho on board at the LaLiga club.
Apparently “sources close to the Singaporean magnate confirm that yesterday there was a call between him and Jorge Mendes”. The contact was to arrange a meeting between Lim and his Valencia associates and Mourinho.
The outlet suggest Mourinho has an “excellent relationship with Lim”. He also knows the club well from his time in Spain with Real Madrid.
Valencia are believed to be on the verge of sacking boss Javi Gracia, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Languishing at the wrong end of the table, Gracia looks unlikely to last the season. And the club have already made the decision to sack Gracia this summer with his current contract set to expire in July 2022.
Diego Martinez, Rafa Benitez and former Valencia B team coach Miguel Grau are options. Lim though is understood to have set his sights on Mourinho after Monday’s news.
Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher doubts Mourinho will ever take charge of another Premier League club.
Levy took the decision to fire the Portuguese boss after their 2-2 draw against Everton saw their hopes of Champions League football next season diminish.
And Carragher doesn’t think another top Premier League club would ever take a punt on Mourinho again.
Carragher: Mourinho won’t manage in England again
“I don’t see Mourinho back in the Premier League, I think that ship’s sailed now,” Carragher said on Sky Sports. “I struggle to think of any club – he’s been at Spurs, so he’s not going to Arsenal, he’s been at United so he’s not going to City, Liverpool wouldn’t have him.
“Would he go to a middle of the table club? I just don’t see him there, I really don’t. It’s either international football or maybe Italy. The Italian champions this year will be Inter Milan, with Antonio Conte, who plays his type of football – so maybe you can get away with it a little bit more in Italy, because it was certainly a turn-off for Spurs supporters.
“I couldn’t see light at the end of the tunnel for Spurs. My argument was, was winning the Carabao Cup for Spurs supporters enough to keep Jose in a job, looking to the future?
“I always thought, keep him until the cup final, he’s great in one-off games. Maybe not as much now, but I think Spurs have got less chance of winning now, and Pep Guardiola will be pleased when he sees that.
“Unless the players have gone to Daniel Levy and the feeling inside the club is that bad that they actually feel they do have more chance of winning at the weekend. Or Daniel Levy felt that if he won that cup it would make it more difficult to move him on.”
