Donny van de Beek has vowed to “learn” from the best midfielders in the world after joining Manchester United on a five-year deal.
The 23-year-old, who is on international duty with Holland, moves to Old Trafford for a fee thought to be in the region of €39m, plus another €5m in add-ons.
Van de Beek skipped Holland training on Monday to undergo his United medical in the Netherlands and he has penned a deal until 2025.
The central midfielder will travel to the UK after his country’s Nations League games against Poland (September 4) and Italy (September 7).
There remains some question marks over the role Van de Beek will play in the United side. Some believe he will line up in a midfield three alongside Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes. Others, namely Mark Bosnich, believes Pogba could lose his place in the side.
However, rather than claim he’s here to take either of their places, Van de Beek has sent the duo a message. In an effort to ease any tension, he insists he’s at United to learn from them, as well as add his own mark on the side.
Speaking after signing on the dotted line, Van de Beek said: “I cannot begin to explain how incredible an opportunity it is to join a club with such an amazing history.
“I would like to thank everyone at Ajax. I grew up there and I will always have a special bond with the club.
“I am now ready to take the next step in my career and perform at the highest level. There is no higher standard than Manchester United.
“Everyone has told me how amazing the Old Trafford atmosphere is. I am looking forward to experiencing that, once it is safe for the fans to return.”
On the successful Pogba-Fernandes tandem, he added: “This team has some of the best midfielders in the world and I know that I can learn from them. I’m also going bring my own strengths to the group.
“Having spoken to the manager about his vision for this team, the direction that the club is going in is hugely exciting and I cannot wait to be a part of that.”

De Jong welcomes ‘beautiful’ transfer
Van de Beek’s former Ajax teammate Frenkie De Jong reveals the duo had a chat about the move before it was sealed.
With the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Tottenham also making enquiries, Van de Beek clearly had a decision to make.
However, the 23-year-old wasted no time in consulting with his best friend in the game, Barcelona star De Jong.
Detailing their chat, De Jong said: “I spoke to Donny [Van de Beek] about his transfer.. “This is a beautiful transfer and we are all very happy for him.
“Did he ask me for advice? No, no, he can think by himself.”
