Van de Beek issues Solskjaer plea over new Man Utd role to get minutes

Donny van de Beek has reportedly told Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he is happy to play “wherever the coach needs him”.

Netherlands international Van de Beek has had a limited impact since arriving at Old Trafford.

While he has featured in all three of the club’s Premier League games to date, the 23-year-old has only played 45 minutes. However he made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut against Crystal Palace.

United have made plans to further integrate Van de Beek by putting him on a new strength training regime. But according to the Manchester Evening News, the midfielder has taken the situation into his own hands.

He has reportedly informed Solskjaer that he is willing to put the needs of the team ahead of his own.

As such, Van de Beek is ready to play left-wing, should Solskjaer require him there. The newspaper says that it could be a “temporary switch” in a bid to offer him more game time.

While struggling for Premier League minutes, the midfielder has featured heavily in the Carabao Cup. He has played both games so far, notching an assist in the 3-0 win over Brighton.

What’s more, Van de Beek could earn his first Premier League start against Newcastle on Saturday. United have a wealth of midfield talent, but Paul Pogba’s role is in doubt.

As for the Dutchman’s potential involvement on the left wing, he could form a partnership with Alex Telles. The new left-back has arrived to provide serious competition for Englishman Luke Shaw.

United head into Saturday’s clash with Newcastle following their 6-1 defeat to Tottenham before the international break.

Portugal midfielde Fernandes hit out at reports earlier this week that claimed he has lost faith in his manager.

But Solskjaer says such claims are part and parcel of being a United player during a tough run of results.
