Van de Beek told Man Utd struggles were ‘inevitable’ as major transfer away is discussed

Donny van de Beek has been told he was ‘always likely to struggle’ during his first season at Manchester United – but countryman Bryan Roy insists he has the ability to play at any major European club.
The Holland star has made just two Premier League starts since his £40million signing from Ajax last summer. Van de Beek’s chances of regular game time have been severely hampered by the outstanding form of Bruno Fernandes, who plays in exactly the same attacking midfield position.
Despite having the ability to play in a deeper role, Van de Beek then finds himself battling with the likes of Paul Pogba, Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic for a starting spot.
With his game time limited, the 23-year-old has been tipped for a move away from Old Trafford this summer.
However, compatriot Roy always felt Van de Beek was destined to struggle in his first season away from Ajax. He claims the situation at United, namely the presence of Pogba, was always going to be an issue.
But speaking to Tutto Juve, (via Sport Witness) he’s told van de Beek not to lose heart.
“It was predictable, Manchester United is full of great players in his role. Either he plays, or Pogba plays, in fact Solskjaer thinks so too. Let’s not talk about disappointment or failure, there can be a year of apprenticeship for a young man like Donny.”
Those comments echo similar views shared by former Liverpool hero Dirk Kuyt.

Dirk Kuyt: Donny van de Beek's time will come
Former Netherlands international Dirk Kuyt says Donny van de Beek must continue to be patient at Manchester United, and there is a big jump from Eredivisie to the Premier League.
Van de Beek has mentioned as a potential target for Juventus this summer. And former Nottingham Forest man Roy reckons Van de Beek has the abilities to shine for both Juve and any other major club.
Discussing his chances of a move away, Roy was ruling nothing out.
“Of course, I would see him well at Juve,” Roy added. “He can play in any major European club, but he’ll just have to have a little patience. The right time will come.”

Real chief ‘fuming’ as United ‘snatch’ Pau Torres
Manchester United are reported to have won the race to sign prized Pau Torres this summer – to leave Real Madrid president Florentino Perez spitting feathers.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reported to have been given the green light to spend this summer. As such, the United boss is looking to strengthen in three positions. On his wanted list are a new striker, a right-back and a centre-half. Indeed, a number of big names have been mentioned as possibles to come in as a partner for Harry Maguire.
Villarreal defender Torres has reportedly emerged as Solskjaer’s No 1 target this summer. Those hopes have been significantly boosted amid claims the 24-year-old is keen to move to Old Trafford. Indeed, United are said to have had contact with Villarreal in ‘recent weeks’ to register their interest.
The fact that Torres is the left-footed centre-half that Solskjaer has been craving makes him an even more attractive option.
However, news that Torres is set to move to United have not gone down well at the Bernabeu. As per El Desmarque, Perez is said to be ‘very angry’ after learning the defender is poised for Old Trafford.
They claim Perez had earmarked Torres as the heir to Sergio Ramos and that United’s move has left their plans in tatters. They conclude that Perez now thinks United have stolen the defender from under their noses.
