Van Dijk jokingly snubs three Liverpool stars with glowing Gomez praise

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has told centre-back partner Joe Gomez that he is his favoured partner at the back for the Reds.

Van Dijk arrived from Southampton in January 2018 and has become one of the first names on boss Jurgen Klopp‘s team sheet, playing every one of the 67 Premier League games since the start of last season.

Indeed, his presence has been felt enormously as Klopp’s men have gone on to reach a club-record 97 points in the top flight last term and win the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup this campaign.

However, the player to partner Netherlands captain Van Dijk has varied over the past couple of seasons, with Gomez, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren competing for a place in the side.

Gomez was in stunning form last season until a serious leg injury suffered in December allowed Matip to seize his opportunity and the former Cameroon international stepped up impressively.

Matip, Gomez and Lovren have interchanged again this season and so Van Dijk was asked by fans on Twitter on Tuesday evening who he would most liked to have played alongside out of any centre-back to have played.

Perhaps jokingly, Van Dijk replied: “Joe Gomez”.

Van Dijk has typically impressed again this season to help his side to earn 27 wins from their 29 Premier League games so far, before the season was brought to a halt in March.

In other news, Liverpool have reportedly named their price for attacker Xherdan Shaqiri.

The Switzerland international has been heavily linked with a move away from Liverpool after failing to stamp his mark on Klopp’s side.
