Villarreal make Tottenham defender wanted by Leeds their top target

Villarreal have put Tottenham defender Juan Foyth at the top of their transfer wishlist, according to reports.

Foyth looks likely to depart Tottenham this summer, having had limited opportunities in his three years at the club. He hasn’t played since December.

Leeds United have reportedly been considering a move for the Argentine defender. The promoted club failed to bring back Ben White after his loan from Brighton, so are eyeing other defensive reinforcements and have already signed Robin Koch.

However, a new rival has emerged for the signature of Foyth. According to AS, Villarreal want to lure him to Spain.

The La Liga club, whose manager is former Arsenal boss Unai Emery, have been monitoring Foyth from before his time at Tottenham. He previously played for Estudiantes in Argentina, during which time Villarreal became aware of him.

AS (as cited by Sport Witness) state that Jose Mourinho now “discards” the player, so it could be their best ever chance to sign him.

Indeed, former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was a key factor in convincing Foyth to join Tottenham in the first place. Mourinho does not share the same opinion on the player, and therefore is willing to send him away.

However, the club hierarchy still believe in Foyth even if the manager does not. Therefore, Spurs may only sanction a loan deal, or could ask for a buyback clause in a permanent deal.

Foyth wants to stay in Europe

Back in July, the player made no secret of his desire to move on for more regular gametime elsewhere.

However, he denied that he could return to his native Argentina, insisting it would be better for his career to stay in Europe.

“I don’t think about going back to Argentina,” he said. “Right now it’s best to stay in Europe. It’s what I want and what the club will surely look for, either with a sale or a loan.

“For my future and because the dream of every player is to be in Europe, the best thing is to stay here and seek continuity.”
