Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk has praised the depth of Liverpool’s defensive options after their 2-0 win over Fulham.
In what is Liverpool’s best start to a Premier League campaign since 2002/03, the result against the Cottagers extended the Reds’ unbeaten start to 12 and stretched their tally of clean sheets to seven.
The Reds have conceded only five goals so far and Van Dijk’s partnership with England international Joe Gomez has been a huge factor, with the pair regularly at the heart of Jurgen Klopp’s fearsome defence.
However, the Dutchman believes Liverpool’s other centre-back options would be capable of similar form such is the many strong options open to Klopp.
“We have great centre-backs here. Joel [Matip] was not even on the bench [against Fulham] and that says a lot about our squad.
“I’m just enjoying playing for Liverpool, it doesn’t really matter who is standing next to me. I am happy to be out there.
“Me and Joe are getting along really well outside the pitch and that helps on the pitch as well.”
Liverpool currently sit second in the Premier League table, just two points adrift of current champions Manchester City, and Van Dijk admits his side need to continue this run if they are to deny them back-to-back league titles.
“For us the challenge is to win or try to win every game that is ahead of us,” Van Dijk said.
“The season is very long. City are not going to win every game 5-0 and are going to have tough games like everyone else.
“We are winning games so we are doing pretty well and have made a better start than last season. We have to keep building on it, improve things. It’s a good sign that we are still improving but still doing well.
“City are the champions and the best team in the league but we will try everything to be as good as we can.”
