5. v Southampton – Anfield – 2001

Gerrard is renowned for his long-range shooting ability, although the midfielder cannot have hit too many better than this superb effort to open the scoring against the Saints at Anfield 14 years ago.

Picking up possession of the ball midway through Southampton’s half, Gerrard advanced on goal before hitting a right-footed rocket that left Paul Jones in the visitors’ goal clutching at thin air.

4. v Everton – Goodison Park – 2001

Gerrard managed to score 10 goals against the Reds’ bitter rivals during his Liverpool career, and this effort is the most memorable.

The ball was worked across to a rampaging Gerrard, who was full of confidence after starring and scoring for England in the famous 5-1 win over Germany. Despite a tough angle, the midfielder hammered home into the far corner and went charging down the touchline, cupping his ear.

3. v Newcastle – St James’ Park – 2007

The Liverpool captain is not too bad at taking free kicks either, as this sweetly struck effort to give the Reds the lead at Newcastle eight years ago shows.

Fellow midfielder Lucas touched the ball across to Gerrard, with the Englishman then beating Shay Given with a piledriver from distance to put the Merseysiders well on the way to a 3-0 win at St James’.

2. v Middlesbrough – Anfield – 2005

Another in Gerrard’s long list of memorable strikes from distance, this wonder goal to draw his side level against Middlesbrough eight years ago really does take some beating.

Gerrard controlled a crossfield pass from John Arne Riise with his right foot, before letting the ball bounce and then thumping an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net past a helpless Brad Jones in Boro’s goal.

1. v Manchester United – Anfield – 2001

This goal made Manchester United sit up and notice that Liverpool had a genuine world-class talent on their hands.

Charging through the United midfield, Gerrard got his head up and lashed a strike past Fabien Barthez from 30 yards to set Liverpool on their way to a first home win against Manchester United since December 1995.
