Rooney dreading prospect of Liverpool landing former Man Utd target

Thiago Alcantara

Wayne Rooney says Liverpool will do well to sign Thiago Alcantara, admitting he “hopes” the Bayern Munich midfielder does not move to Anfield.

Reports claim Liverpool are keen on the 29-year-old Spaniard, who is seeking a new adventure away from the Bundesliga.

Bayern’s Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has said he would negotiate a “fair offer” for Thiago, although the club’s CEO reportedly wants at least £27million.

That price has allegedly put Liverpool off, with the Reds willing to wait until January when he will be available to agree a pre-contract agreement with another club.

In any case, Manchester United hero Rooney says he would like Thiago to consider other options before moving to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“He almost came to United in 2013 and now Liverpool are linked with him,” Rooney wrote of the midfielder in his Sunday Times column.

“He’s one of the best midfielders around – I just hope he doesn’t go [to Liverpool]. He can take the ball, be composed on it, keep things ticking over – and he’ll put his foot in.

“He’s an all-round midfielder, really, with a bit of everything.

“He backs up that Bayern press and he drops in between the centre halves to take the ball yet can also join in when they’re playing around the other box too.

“He’s a great player. It would be great to see him in the Premier League, actually.”

Thiago has enjoyed a trophy-laden career, playing a key role at Barcelona before his move to Bayern in 2013.

Across both clubs, he has won 11 league titles as well as the Champions League.

However, he could look to move to the English top flight to round off his illustrious career.
