England icon shares top piece of advice for Man City star Phil Foden

Wayne Rooney has shared some advice for Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden ahead of this summer’s Euro 2020 finals.

Foden is enjoying his best season to date in a City shirt. He has 10 goals and six assists across 29 appearances in all competitions.

The 20-year-old also put in a man-of-the-match display against Liverpool last weekend in a 4-1 win.

He looks destined to play a vital role for his country in the European Championship, and England’s all-time top scorer Rooney has offered some words of wisdom for the youngster.

He said: “I think [my advice] for Phil Foden is to keep doing what he’s doing. I think he has been one of the best players in the league this season. [Pep] Guardiola has managed him really well.

“I spoke to him a couple of times and you could see he is a very level-headed lad. So, to keep doing what he’s doing. He’s entertaining to watch, great to watch.

“I think there’s a few players, not just him, [such as] Jack Grealish who bring something different to the national team. They have to be in the squad for the Euros and arguably have to play. They are that good.

“He’s scoring, he’s assisting and hopefully he can carry that form on with the national team.”

Pep Guardiola says he only receives praise over his handling of Phil Foden when Manchester City win.

Foden made his England debut in September against Iceland. He came off the bench in November’s friendly with Ireland but truly announced himself on the international stage two games later.

He started the reverse fixture against Iceland at Wembley in which he assisted Declan Rice for the opener and scored two second half goals in a 4-0 victory.

Foden wants to be a one-club man

Meanwhile, Foden has insisted he has no desire to ever leave City as it is a dream come true to play at the Etihad Stadium.

He came up through the City youth ranks before making his first-team debut in November 2017. That was in a Champions League game against Feyenoord, while his Premier League debut came against Tottenham in December 2017.

He has already racked up 101 appearances in all competitions and seems content to play his entire career with the Citizens.

“I can only see myself playing for Manchester City, considering how much I’ve supported them from a young age,” he told BBC’s Football Focus.

“It always helps when you play for a club you support. When I was younger, it was a dream to play for the club, so never did I think I would make it to 100 appearances so early.”
