WBA’s Berahino needs to lose some weight, says Clarke
Former West Brom boss Steve Clarke thinks controversial Baggies frontman Saido Berahino needs to lose some weight.
Berahino, who almost moved to Tottenham in the summer before Albion pulled the plug on the deal over the payment of the deal, was the subject of interest from Newcastle and a host of other clubs last month.
The Geordies are believed to have had a £24million for the player bid rejected by West Brom with chairman Jeremy Peace insistent of keeping hold of the player.
The 22-year-old, who has scored six goals, started Wednesday’s FA Cup clash against Peterborough, but he has not started a league game since October 31 and Clarke believes his lack of game time is starting to show.
Asked what the likely problem is with Berahino, Clarke told talkSPORT: “That’s a great question – you should probably ask Tony.
“He did well for me. He made his breakthrough into the first-team while I was manager at West Brom, and he was good. He’s a boy who just wants to play football.
“There’s one thing I would say about Saido, and I saw it a little bit last night in the cup, is that he looks a little bit heavy to me.
“He’s always had little ups and downs in his weight and I think the fact he’s not been playing regularly means he’s maybe just put on a couple of kilos.
“It would certainly serve him better if he lost a little bit of weight.”
