Arsene Wenger admits Arsenal made life difficult for themselves in the 3-2 victory over struggling Southampton on Sunday.

Arsenal were caught dozing at the back when Shane Long gave Southampton an early lead at the Emirates, and Charlie Austin was on hand to make it 2-2 just after coming off the bench after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Danny Welbeck had turned things around for Arsenal.

A late Welbeck header ensured Arsenal took all three points despite a below-par performance.

Wenger told Sky Sports: “It took us some time to get to the pace of the game. In the game we found the resources to win. We had the resources and the spirit. We had the mental resources to win the game.”

The game ended in bad-tempered fashion, with Southampton’s Jack Stephens and Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny both sent off in the closing stages.

Wenger was surprised at Elneny’s dismissal, adding: “I am surprised Elneny was sent off because I know him very well. He is not an aggressive player.”

Welbeck said Arsenal had expected a tough test against the struggling Saints.

“We knew it was going to be a competitive game, Southampton are in a difficult position,” said Welbeck.

“I’m happy with the assist, glad to get the goals. I’m pleased with that. I know when I get the opportunity in front of goal I will put them away. In the end I got the (second) goal.”
