Arsene Wenger believes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is progressing and hopes the player will sign a new contract in the summer.

The 23-year-old only has one year remaining on his Arsenal contract and he has been linked with a move to Liverpool.

He has made 42 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals from a variety of positions, including central midfield – where Wenger sees his long-term future – and also at right wing back.

Wenger has been happy with his efforts and believes the player should look to stay on with the Gunners.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: Arsenal future is in doubt

“His performances have been good, and positive. It looks like he makes a move forward,” said Wenger at Thursday’s press conference.

“He has all the qualities to play well there. Hopefully it will give him confidence.

“Personally I think he has to commit his future to the club and I hope he will do so this summer.”

Asked about his own contract again, which he originally said would be announced in March or April, he said: “We are in May, so I was wrong.”
