Wenger: Chelsea prevented Arsenal from buying Belgian star

Arsene Wenger has said Arsenal were interested in signing Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku until Chelsea signed him in 2011.

Lukaku has now scored against 22 of the 29 different opponents that he has faced in the Premier League and, at just 23 years of age, he looks destined to reach the upper echelons of the all-time Premier League goalscoring charts.

However, his career in England could have turned out differently had Arsenal managed to get ahead of the Blues, who subsequently loaned him out to West Brom and his current club Everton.

“I knew him when he played in Belgium for Anderlecht,” said Wenger.

“He came very early for Chelsea, after that, when a player is at a big London club it’s difficult to get him.”

Wenger also confirmed that he would like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to stay with the Gunners after reports emerged that he was frustrated with life at the Emirates.
