Wenger makes Wilshere claim as Arsenal boss ignores Wolves link

Arsene Wenger believes Jack Wilshere will sign a long-term deal to stay at Arsenal – as the Gunners boss gave short shrift to claims he had been targeted by Wolves.

The midfielder will be out of contract in around 10 weeks time, with the player yet to sign the new deal offered to him by the Gunners.

Reports in Thursday’s newspapers suggested promoted Wolves had spoken with Wilshere about a free-transfer move to Molineux this summer, but when questioned about the link in his press conference, Wenger was quick to ignore the claims.

“I cannot give you any news,” the Arsenal boss said. “I don’t know what is in his mind. He has an offer and we want him to stay but he hasn’t signed.

“It is a long-term contract and I hope he will sign it. I am always confident.

“You want the players to stay and be paid well. We pay our players very well. He has the freedom to make that decision.

“He knows I want him to stay. I hope at some stage he will.

“He is focused on the next game and will make his decision later. I think he will make that decision before the end of the season.

“I don’t think he will want to go to the World Cup without sorting his situation.”
