Club chief denies Man Utd are concerned about loanee’s lack of gametime

Werder Bremen head of scouting and professional football Clemens Fritz insists that Tahith Chong is close to making a breakthrough into their first team.

Chong joined Werder on loan from Manchester United over the summer. It is the first time in his senior career he has played for someone other than United.

At 20 years of age, regular football at a competitive level is now essential to Chong. Therefore, United loaned him out so he could gain experience in the Bundesliga.

However, despite scoring in the German Cup, his time out on loan has not got off to the best of starts in general. Chong has made just one start in the Bundesliga so far, coming on for two other appearances.

It has already prompted concerns that the United youngster may not get the development he needs over the course of the season. However, Fritz denies that is the case.

“The exchange with Manchester is going very well,” he told Deichstube.

“Tahith is close to the team. Neither we nor Manchester United are concerned that he won’t get enough playing time.

“There will be enough time for it. You can already see developmental steps in him. Steps that should lead to longer Bundesliga appearances as soon as possible.”

So far, Chong has seen just 81 minutes of action in the German top flight. Admittedly, it is more than the 34 minutes of Premier League action he managed with United in 2019-20, but his parent club would still presumably like to see him playing more.

The Dutch youth winger initially joined United’s academy back in 2016, but has only made five first team appearances for the Red Devils so far.

Fred backs duo to succeed at United

While Chong was one player to move away from Old Trafford this summer (albeit temporarily), there were a few players of note who joined the club.

Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani were two late additions in the transfer window for United, who also signed Facundo Pellistri and Donny van de Beek over the summer.

And United midfielder Fred, who has been with the club since 2018, thinks both will make an impact.
