Werder keen to replace Everton flop with Liverpool squad man

Marko Grujic, Divock Origi

Liverpool could offload Marko Grujic on transfer deadline day after the Serbian was linked with a move to Werder Bremen.

Grujic’s future at Anfield is uncertain, with Liverpool reported last week to be ready to move him on if a suitable bid came in.

Borussia Monchengladbach are keen to bring the 24-year-old back to the Bundesliga for a third season. According to the Daily Mail though, Grujic has now received interest from the Premier League.

Southampton and West Ham have both registered initial interest in a season-long loan deal for the Serbian. However that interest has not progressed.

Saints instead appear more likely to sign Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who looks destined to leave Chelsea.

That has left Grujic facing an uncertain wait as to what happens next.

However, according to Bild and Sky Germany, Werder Bremen have now opened talks with Liverpool over a potential deal.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have invested heavily this summer in Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota.

As such, they are keen to avoid another loan for Grujic and would prefer a cash sale.

However, with Bremen preferring a loan arrangement, it’s thought a compromise could be reached.

To that end, Bremen hope to secure the signature of Grujic by signing him on an initial loan with an obligation to buy next summer.

There is no word on the sort of fee Liverpool would require, but it’s thought they rate the former Red Star Belgrade man in the £18m bracket.

Grujic has just returned to Anfield having spent the last two season in Germany with Hertha Berlin.

Grujic to replace Davy Klaasen

Werder, who narrowly escaped relegation from the Bundesliga last season, are desperate to do better this time around.

It’s reported they want Grujic as a replacement for former Everton man Davy Klaassen, who is expected to leave for Ajax.

The Dutch side have struck an €11m deal to re-sign Klaassen as a replacement for Donny van De Beek.

Klaassen spent an unhappy season with Everton in 2017/18. Having joined from Ajax in a £23.6m deal, the midfielder struggled to find his feet on Merseyside.

The Dutchman made just 27 appearances in total before being allowed to leave for Werder for just £12million.

He has since recaptured his form and rebuilt his reputation.

Grujic, meanwhile, has made two appearances in the EFL Cup for Liverpool this season. However, he hasn’t made the squad for any of their four Premier League games so far and appears down Klopp’s pecking order.
