West Brom have reportedly stepped up their interest in signing Manchester United defender Chris Smalling this summer.
Baggies boss Tony Pulis is on the lookout for a new central defender after Jonas Olsson’s departure and sees England star Smalling as the perfect replacement, according to the Birmingham Mail.
The report also claims that Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson and Sunderland stopper Lamine Kone are on Pulis’ radar too but that Smalling would be first choice.
The 27-year-old is expected to be available for a fee between £12m and £15m, although there is also reported interest from London trio Tottenham, Arsenal and West Ham.
Smalling, who still has 24 months left on his contract, is likely to be left out in the cold if he doesn’t quit Old Trafford this summer, with United having already signed Swedish star Victor Lindelof this summer.
Jose Mourinho is clearly not a huge fan either after publicly criticizing Smalling last season and also handed him only 13 Premier League starts.
