West Ham have identified Daniele Rugani as the man to help improve their defence, according to reports.
Defence was a major issue for West Ham last season. Of the teams that stayed up, only Aston Villa conceded more goals than them in the Premier League.
Therefore, they are on the lookout for a reinforcement to partner Issa Diop this season. And according to SportItalia, the solution may come from Serie A.
Rugani is the player in question, with his chances of first team football at Juventus looking slim. The 26-year-old is behind the likes of Giorgio Chiellini, Matthijs De Ligt and Leonardo Bonucci in the pecking order.
Therefore, he could be considering his future. And SportItalia claim West Ham are in talks over the chance to sign him.
The Hammers are yet to submit a formal bid for the centre-back, with Juventus looking for a fee in the region of €20m.
WEST HAM ONLY SUITOR FOR RUGANI
Rugani was previously linked with the likes of Arsenal, Wolves and Tottenham. There were recent claims that he could have been one of the players on offer when Juventus met with the latter.
During this transfer window, though, the main interest is coming from Fulham, Sevilla and Rennes.
But West Ham are the only club to have opened talks about the former Empoli defender, who played just 10 times in Serie A last season.
Rugani has earned seven caps for Italy in his career, but the last came in 2018. Therefore, he may need a move to revitalise his international chances.
TARKOWSKI ANOTHER DEFENSIVE TARGET
To date, West Ham have been mainly linked with Burnley’s James Tarkowski in their hunt for a new defender.
However, Burnley have set a high asking price for the Englishman, who like Rugani could be considering a move to boost his hopes of playing at international level.
Another obstacle for the Hammers in their pursuit of Tarkowski is the competition from Leicester, who have also made a bid.
