Who broke Bernd Leno to Arsenal transfer and when?

Arsenal announced the signing of goalkeeper Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday evening, but who broke the story first and when?

Leno, 26, moves to the Emirates Stadium for a fee of £19.3million – the release clause in his contract with the German club and it was German publication Bild who nailed the transfer in March.

Bild claimed on March 6 that Leno was interesting Arsenal and Napoli and open to move abroad.

“I have often said that playing abroad is tempting for me,” Leno said. “But right now, I am not wasting too much time on those thoughts. First of all, I want to return to Champions League with Bayer Leverkusen.

“There’s been speculation like that two years ago and I thought about that too much back then.

“Those questions kept coming. Two years down the road, I am more relaxed now.”

By March 20 The Sun had got hold of the story and reported: “Arsenal are lining up a £25million summer move for Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno.”

Bild then claimed Arsenal had opened talks with Leno on May 9 with his release clause set at £22million.

And Leno finally signing a long-term contract with the Gunners last night – so hats off to Bild.
