Wijnaldum reveals difficult situation with pal Van Dijk after knee surgery

Georginio Wijnaldum, Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has revealed that he found it difficult to approach Netherlands teammate Virgil van Dijk after his knee operation.

Van Dijk underwent extensive surgery in October after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament against Everton.

The Dutchman had proved a stalwart in the Reds’ team, playing in every Premier League game for two seasons.

As such, Liverpool have felt his absence at the back – not just for his top defending. Wijnaldum has now said that he experienced similar feelings without his good friend being around.

Indeed, he also admitted that he was unsure whether to speak to Van Dijk so soon after the operation.

“In the beginning it was quite difficult because you don’t know if you can call or it’s better to leave him alone,” the midfielder told Liverpool’s official website.

“I have to say that he makes it easier for me to call him because he was calling me most of the time and he was texting me most of the time.

“Normally what I did in the beginning was just a quick text message on WhatsApp that I was thinking of him and I prayed for him and those kind of things.

“It was also because I didn’t know how he was feeling and everything, but now I see that he’s quite good.”

Van Dijk recently posted a picture of himself on social media at Liverpool’s new training facility. However, it will be some time – possibly not before the end of the season – until he returns.

Nevertheless, Wijnaldum offered an update on how his international teammate is progressing.

“He deals good with the situation, he’s positive about the situation and everything,” the 29-year-old said.

“We call quite often now because I know that I can. But in the beginning for me it was a bit like, ‘Can I call him or not?’ because I can understand that in a situation he was in you also want a little bit of rest and moment for yourself.

“In the beginning it was a little bit searching for the right way to approach him. But now it goes really well.”

Liverpool return to action on Sunday when Wolves are the visitors to Anfield.
