Georginio Wijnaldum

Gini Wijnaldum has made it clear to Liverpool that he wants to extend his stay with the champions, as long as his new contract reflects his standing at the club, claims a report.

Wijnaldum’s future at Anfield has been under the microscope since the summer with his deal set to expire in June.

As of today the 30-year-old can enter talks with clubs from abroad, but 90min claim he has no desire to do so.

In fact Wijnaldum’s “preference is to stay” but the deal on the table from the club is not to his liking.

The Dutch star, who is one of Jurgen Klopp’s trusted generals, would like a contract that recognises his standing as one of the champions’ experienced performers.

It’s not clear what deal is on the table and whether the length of the prospective deal or the financial aspect are the sticking point.

The report says that Liverpool’s owners FSG are not keen on handing out a long-term deal on big money to a player who turned 30 in November.

Wijnaldum* was the subject of reports linking him with Barcelona last year.

In fact Ronald Koeman confirmed his interest in his fellow countryman. Since then Holland international has also been linked with a move to Inter Milan and Wolves.

Jurgen Klopp’s stance has been unchanged all along. Wijnaldum has featured in all 16 of the Reds’ Premier League outings in 2020/21 and he is among Klopp’s group or senior leaders along with Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Virgil van Dijk.

Klopp stance

In November, Klopp said: “I would be happy if he would stay here.

“I am pretty happy with Gini. You can see that when you see most of the line-ups! He always played good, that’s why he played so many games. And he has played plenty of positions, different positions.

“He’s in a good moment, thank God! Long may it continue.

“There is nothing else to say about it. As long as nothing is decided, then everything is possible. I’m positive.”

The report says Klopp firmly believes that Wijnaldum has several years left at the very top.

The Guardian reported recently that Wijnaldum asked the club for more time to think about his future. Most probably with the aim of coaxing a n improved deal from Liverpool’s American owners.

The ball is firmly in the court of FSG, with Klopp and Wijnaldum both chasing the same outcome.
