Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner has praised central defender Mathias Jorgensen for his sensational Christmas pledge, where he has offered to buy a pint for every Terriers fan that travelled to Southampton on Saturday.
Jorgensen – also known as ‘Zanka’ – promised to fork out for a pint for every Terriers fan who made the long trip to the south coast, and is ready to honour that vow for each of the 1,581 travelling supporters.
That could run the Dane’s bar tab close to £5,000, and Wagner hailed the gesture after the 1-1 Premier League draw at St Mary’s.
“I like this idea,” he said. “I think everybody who knows Zanka as a player and character isn’t surprised that he’s done it.
“He wanted to say thank you for his very warm welcome in this football club.”
Jorgensen had tweeted his pledge in the week’s build-up to Huddersfield’s trip to Southampton, stating “Zanka Claus is coming to town”.
The 27-year-old helped the Terriers to a hard-fought point. Laurent Depoitre’s third goal in as many games denied Saints, who had led through Charlie Austin.
“Our supporters were so loud, I think they took this beer before the game!” Wagner said.
“They’ll be very excited for the Boxing Day game now at home, and hopefully we can keep playing the way we have been recently.”
