Nottingham Forest transfer news: Enquiry made to Chelsea for Emerson Palmieri, as second Italian also considered

Chelsea have received an enquiry for Emerson Palmieri from fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest, who are also eyeing another Italian left-back.

Nottingham Forest have been busy in the transfer market since their promotion back to the top flight. Their number of signings goes into double figures. Yet there are other areas of their squad they are still seeking to strengthen.

For example, they recently saw their efforts to sign Alex Moreno from Real Betis fail. The left-back was the subject of a successful bid, but he opted against the move himself.

Hence, Steve Cooper’s side could go back into the market to find an alternative. One player they have enquired about, according to the Evening Standard, is Chelsea’s Emerson Palmieri.

The Brazil-born Italy international has fallen further down the pecking order after the signing of Marc Cucurella. After spending last season out on loan with Lyon, it looks unlikely for Emerson to have a future at Stamford Bridge.

Cucurella will be competing with Ben Chilwell for the left wing-back role in Thomas Tuchel’s system. Therefore, even with Marcos Alonso on his way out, Emerson would still be third choice.

Still well regarded in his adopted country of Italy, Emerson has been tipped to make a transfer back to Serie A. However, he now could get the chance to continue in the Premier League.

The Standard do not mention how much further Nottingham Forest have gone after their enquiry. They also acknowledge rival interest from Juventus, who have Champions League football on offer.

Nottingham Forest enter negotiations for alternative

Perhaps with that in mind, Forest have been expanding their shortlist. Elsewhere, a few sources in Italy have disclosed their interest in Fiorentina full-back Cristiano Biraghi.

Football News 24 spoke of contact between Biraghi’s agent and Forest. The left-back could be offered a four-year contract worth €2.2million per season (around £35,000 per week).

His transfer would cost €6million (£5.1million). In addition, Alfredo Pedulla has confirmed negotiations – although not advanced – are underway.

Pedulla has claimed that Fiorentina would like to renew his contract, but would not be able to compete with Forest’s financial offer for his salary.

Hence, Biraghi could end up at the City Ground if Forest pick him over Emerson.

Would Emerson Palmieri or Cristiano Biraghi be better?

It is interesting that Forest could be considering two players who both come from the same country.

Furthermore, they both made their Italy debuts in the same year, 2018. Since then, Emerson has earned 27 caps in comparison to Biraghi’s 13.

It is an indication that the former is more highly rated – at least by his national selectors. Besides, his previous Premier League experience could be beneficial to the top-flight newcomers.

Biraghi is far from a bad player himself, though. He was born two years before Emerson, so has amassed his own wealth of experience.

If he is the more achievable target, Forest could be landing themselves a good player still. And at around £5million for a transfer fee, he would be good value for money too.

It would be interesting to see how Emerson could do elsewhere in the Premier League, though. Forest will likely be picking one or the other, but either would bring benefits.
