Nottingham Forest become ‘most interesting’ suitor for former Tottenham man despite two similar summer arrivals

Nottingham Forest could bring former Tottenham Hotspur full-back Serge Aurier back to the Premier League, according to reports in France.

It has been an extremely busy summer in the transfer market for Nottingham Forest amid their Premier League return. They have signed enough new players to make a brand-new starting XI if they wanted to.

But there are still areas of their squad they are looking to reinforce further before the transfer window closes at the start of September.

Indeed, RMC Sport suggest they are showing a keen interest in ex-Tottenham Hotspur right-back, Serge Aurier. He is currently a free agent following his departure from Villarreal.

According to the French outlet, Nottingham Forest have become ‘the most interesting club’ for Aurier to join. Other suggested routes, including fellow Premier League newcomers Fulham, have been discarded.

There are not many details of the kind of contract that Nottingham Forest would be willing to offer to the Ivory Coast international. However, he could be a target to keep an eye on in the coming days.

Nottingham Forest have already signed two right-backs this summer. Neco Williams – who, admittedly, could also feature further forward in a wide midfield position – arrived at the City Ground from Liverpool after Giulian Biancone joined from Troyes.

Aged 21 and 22 respectively, the two new arrivals should give Nottingham Forest something to build with. But perhaps they might be looking for more experience in the role too, which is where the 29-year-old Aurier could come in.

Nottingham Forest need for Aurier debatable

It would be interesting to see how Aurier would get on in a different setting if he was to return to the Premier League.

There is no indication yet of Nottingham Forest entering formal talks, just that they have an interest. If they do firm it up, Aurier would be hoping to enjoy his fresh start.

But it is debatable how much Nottingham Forest actually need him after their two other signings on the right-hand side.

Of course, they lost the services of Djed Spence after his loan spell from Middlesbrough ended and he joined Tottenham Hotspur instead. He was a major contributor to their promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.

Hence, their work to replace him might not be completely done. Coincidentally, they could take an ex-Tottenham Hotspur man to help.

But with Williams and Biancone already there for the future, Nottingham Forest will need to reflect how much they need Aurier. Still, that hasn’t stopped them pursuing multiple targets in other positions this summer. Therefore, there could yet be room for them to make a move.
